Think about ways that you can make a logo about yourself

Photoshop-3 Assignment

Use Photoshop to create a graphic about YOU – your logo.   You might start with a pencil sketch but then you will need to create a digital graphic of it.   It needs to:

•Be Recognizable at any size
•Emotional or Intuitive Cerebral Connection
•Dares to be Original

Class Starter: Spruce up your Blog

When someone goes to your blog to read “Site Title” or “My First Blog Post” at the top of the page, well, it looks like you don’t know what you’re doing or that you don’t care. Today’s challenge is to go to your WordPress Blog & actually customize your site.  

Go to Theme > Customize and make a change in every tab:

To change your site icon, go to Settings.

Class Starter: 

First Graded Assignment: Write a review of this blog article from TED.

Take time to read through the blog article.  Next go to your new shared folder and open it. From there, hit the “new” button and select Google Docs icon.  This will open a document where you will put your name on the top, a title of the article, and then just tell me what you think of it.   Google Docs will auto-save your work!

Turn In Instructions:
Last time we met, you created folder on your Google Drive and shared it with me.  When you double-click on it you can see a space where you can drag and drop files from your computer to your shared folder on your drive and you are ready to turn in todays assignment.

Class Activity:  Successfully start a WordPress Blog Website  
Open a free WordPress account using a personal email address.

Follow these instructions:

  1. Go to WordPress to create a profile and use a NON-school email address to sign up.
  2. Click on “start a free blog”
  3. Choose a template
  4. Enter a domain or keyword.  If your domain is available, select the free version.  It will look something like this:   “keyword”.wordpress.com
    *tip: make it short, memorable, easy to type.
  5. Select a free plan
  6. Enter your email address and create a password.  (jot it down somewhere, just in case you forget what it is!)
  7. Once your blog is up, make your first blog post.

Class Starter: Look at your Blog

WP-pagesNext month you will be asked to add pages to your class blog. Take the first 15 minutes of today’s class to test out a few things that you haven’t used in WordPress.
Try to do the following:
-Customize your Theme
-Add a Page
-Add a Widget

When you first arrive in class today – you will need to make sure that you have properly created an assignment folder on your google drive and that you have shared it with me.
I have added many of your folders to my drive, but I am still missing a few!

This task is worth 5 points.  So, again here are the instructions again:

•Go to your school gmail and open your drive 1000px-Google_Drive_Logofrom the application grid.

•Create a new folder and name it as follows: “B7 – YOUR NAME”
(or B6 if you are in B6)

#1 – Successfully start a WordPress Blog Website
(50 points!)

Last time we opened WordPress accounts, and started a BLOG website.
Well, almost…
It turns out that many of you were exactly right when you said, “Mrs. Bury, I don’t think we can USE our school email to open a WordPress account!”

So, lets just try that again then.  This time you must open a WordPress Blog using a personal email address.  If you do not already have a personal email address, it’s easy to do, just mention it to Mrs. Bury.  

Follow these instructions:

  1. Go to WordPress to create a profile and use a NON-school email address to sign up.

Last week we started creating Google Calendars. Many of you have completed this already. Today you may take some time to finish it. Email me the shortened link to your calendar so I can grade it .   The assignment is fully outlined here.

Class Starter: Create a shared folder on your Google Drive.

Today you will make a very important folder in your drive.  This is the place where you will turn in all of your assignments for this class.

You have 15 minutes to complete this task.
It’s easy!  
Just follow the following steps:
  1. Log in to your your Alpine School District gmail account and find the application grid in the top right corner of the tool bar.

    Click on the grid and select the Drive icon. This will open your drive folder.

  2. Click on the red “new” buttonnew-button to select “folder” .
    This will open a box for you to name the folder. Call it B6 or B7 – your name and click “create”.  You will now see a folder in your Drive.
  3. Right-click on your folder to open a list of options. Click “share” google-drive-share-icon
    This will open a box where you must share this folder with me, Amy Bury by typing in my email address: abury@alpinedistrict.org
    Make sure that my name pops up and you may also change the permissions from “edit” to “view” if you like. Hit “send”.
  4. Now you have your assignment folder and you have shared it with me. When you double-click on it you can see a space where you can drag and drop files from your computer to your shared folder on your drive and you are ready to turn in your assignments for this class!

For the remainder of today’s class, you will create a WordPress account and start a blog!

Let’s get started.
Wordpress

  1. Go to WordPress to create a profile with your Alpine Schools Gmail account.
  2. Click on “start a free blog”
  3. Choose a template
  4. Enter a domain or keyword.  If your domain is available, select the free version.  It will look something like this:   yournameblog.wordpress.com
  5. Select a free plan
  6. Enter your Alpine School District email address and create a password.  Be sure to jot your password down in a safe place!

Great! Now you have your own blog website and you logged into the WordPress Dashboard. This is a good time to slow down and familiarize yourself with the user interface and get to know the dashboard. Here is a introductory video that may be helpful.
