Class Starter:  Creative Commons – Royalty Free – Public Domain

Creative Commons: a kind of copyright that makes it easy for people to copy, share, and build on someone’s creative work – as long as they give the creator credit for it

Royaltyfree:  The right to use copyright material or intellectual property without the need to pay royalties or license fees for each use or per volume sold, or some time period of use or sales.

public domain: creative work that’s not protected by copyright and is therefore free for one to use however one wants

Class Activity:  Check out Library of Congress & Incompetech697_234

The Library of Congress has an interesting history.

The Library of Congress was established by an act of Congress in 1800 when President John Adams signed a bill providing for the transfer of the seat of government from Philadelphia to the new capital city of Washington. The legislation described a reference library for Congress only, containing “such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress – and for putting up a suitable apartment for containing them therein…”  You can find more to read about the history, here.

Incompetech is  a website where you can download mp3 files that are FREE & royalty free, also!  What that means is that the creator of the music has released their work with a Creative Commons license.  Simply put, if you use media with a Creative Commons liscense, you are required to attribute the piece to it’s creator.

For example, I downloaded Zanzibar.mp3

Credit this piece by copying the following to your credits section:

Attribution:
Zanzibar Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)
Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License

do-good1Rob Greenfield had a simple idea, that people are good and the world is a good place. So he decided to put his idea to the ultimate test by flying one-way to a far off place with no money, no credit card, no cellphone, not even a toothbrush. Just the clothes on his back and a passport. He says “Mainstream media portrays the world as a dangerous place, a place that you should fear and I’m out to prove them wrong.”

Listen to Rob Greenfield’s story  from the It’s a Beautiful World Podcast.

cbc59a7def23dba897e89ad9571712f6We all laugh. This hour of Radiolab asks why.

If you look closely, you’ll find that humor has very little to do with it. We ask what makes us laugh, and how it affects us. Along the way, we tickle some rats, listen in on a baby’s first laugh, talk to a group of professional laughers, and travel to Tanzania to investigate an outbreak of contagious laughter.

Listen to the first 8 minutes of the episode titled Laughter from the Radiolab Podcast.
